Product description
Huzhang ("tiger cane") or giant knotweed is an east Asian species (Polygonum cuspidatum),
belonging to the Polygonaceae family. Documented uses in traditional Chinese medicine
date to the first century BC, and contemporary medical uses supported by clinical results
include acute microbial infections or viral hepatitis, chemo- or radiation-induced leukocytopenia,
atherosclerosis, and hyperlipidemia. Resveratrol is a naturally occurring phytoalexin produced
by some higher plants in response to injury or fungal infection. Phytoalexins are chemical
substances produced by plants as a defense against infection by pathogenic microorganisms,
such as fungi. Alexin is from the Greek, meaning to ward off or to protect. Resveratrol may
also have alexin-like activity for humans. Epidemiological, in vitro and animal studies
suggest that a high resveretrol intake is associated with a reduced incidence of cardiovascular
disease, and a reduced risk for cancer.
Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxy- trans -stilbene) is a stilbenoid, a type of natural phenol, and a phytoalexin produced naturally by several plants – especially the roots of the Japanese Knotweed, from which it is extracted commercially – when under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi.
There is limited evidence of health effects in humans. While there is tentative evidence of benefit in some non-human species. [ 5 ] At present, research on resveratrol is still in its infancy. [ 6 ]
A series of early reports found that it increased the lifespan of model organisms. Several scientists involved in these studies went on to found Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, a company working to develop resveratrol analogs as proprietary drugs. However subsequent independent research has failed to replicate these results. [ 7 ] [ 8 ] [ 9 ] In mouse and rat experiments, telomere lengthening, telomerase activity enhancement, anti-inflammatory, blood sugar-lowering and other beneficial cardiovascular effects of resveratrol have been reported; however resveratrol has failed to extend the lifespan of lean, genetically normal mice [ 10 ] [ 11 ] [ 12 ] or rats; [ 13 ] however it does extend maximum lifespan of healthy turquoise killifish.
