The scientific name of Basa fish is Pangasius bocourti, a catfish in the family Pangasiidae of high economic value, raised in many countries around the world. This species is native to the Mekong Delta in Vietnam and to the Chao Phraya River basin in Thailand . This fish is an important food in the international market. In the Mekong Delta, catfish provide for essential demands over the country, and they are exported to other countries. It is promoting the development of Vietnamese fisheries industry. Average annual production of Vietnamese Basa-catfish from 2013 to 2017 is from 1.1 to 1.2 million tons.
Fish oil is an industrial product of great nutritional value due to its content of long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which are currently highly valued for their prophylactic and therapeutic properties in nutritional and health fields. Fish oil, which was previously a by-product of fishmeal used for animal feed, is now recognized as the primary source of these fatty acids
Often marketed and sold for consumption as part of the diet or in dietary supplements in contemporary societies, fish oils also have found roles in external use, as emollients or as general ointments as well as in body art,or for alleged insulation against cold temperatures.
