Prosecco DOCG Valdobbiadene.
The Valdobbiadene hills, in the foothills of Treviso, are the cradle of the famous Prosecco vine since the times of the Roman Empire. This area, from whose vineyards the Prosecco Villa Raspi is produced, was given in 2009 the D.O.C.G. mark that establishes it as sole producer.
The peculiarity of this area is the relentless succession of beautiful, fertile yet steep hills that make it almost impossible to mechanize work. This is why only the small vine growers in the area, led by their ancestors’ ancient lesson and animated by a lively passion, have been able to obtain from the vineyards perched on the hills a genuine and environment-friendly product: Prosecco.
To love nature also means to favor its times and ways: for this, those same vine growers devote themselves to the winemaking process while fully respecting the natural fermentation of grapes, so obtaining a wine that is limited in quantity but of very high quality.
The Grape Variety
The grapes that make up the base of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG Prosecco Superiore are the fruit of the Prosecco vine, today identified with the historic synonym Glera.
Glera is a white grape characterised by yellow-golden fruit in long, straggly, and winged clusters. Its cultivation in this territory, moulded by the Piave River and its lateral branches, makes it possible to obtain spectacular levels of quality thanks to the outstanding variety in the geological composition of the soils.
These ideal terrains are further enhanced by the diverse exposure of the hillsides, the varying altitudes, and the many micro-climates found in this zone, marked by notable temperature changes between the day and night. All these characteristics are responsible for the organoleptic richness of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG Prosecco Superiore, the notes and bouquets of which vary from hillside to hillside.
Vinification
The particular attributes of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG Prosecco Superiore are its freshness, bouquet, and fruity notes. The grapes are vinified according to classic fermentation off skins.
The sparkling process takes place according to the Italian Method (Martinotti-Charmat) as re-elaborated by the Scuola Enologica of Conegliano; this system calls for the introduction of the wine together with the sugar and selected Yeasts in autoclaves, followed by a refermentation of at least 30 days. The “bubbles” of Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG Prosecco Superiore are the delicate fruit of time passing.
Today the name of Prosecco DOC defines the production of a widespread territory, distributed over nine provinces and two regions: Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, while the denomination CONEGLIANO VALDOBBIADENE DOCG PROSECCO SUPERIORE distinguishes the wines produced only on the steep hillsides of the fifteen towns and according to the strictest methods.
The Superiore quality is assured by the presence of the special band, truly an identification of each individual bottle as a guarantee to the consumer.
Types
The percentage of residual sugar, from 0 to 32 g/l, distinguishes the types of Spumante as Brut, Extra Dry, and Dry.
Brut expresses itself in bold floral notes with pleasant sensations of bread crust. Extra Dry is known for its particular harmony of fragrances dominated by the fruity notes of apple and pear, while in the Dry the hints of citrus stand out above all.
Finally, the Rive, a type reserved for Spumante and introduced recently to round out the originality of the wines obtained from individual subzones, according to the concept of "Cru".
Then there are two traditional varieties of Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG Prosecco in this territory: Frizzante (Sparkling) and Col Fondo.
The beauty of nature and architecture blend to create uniquely beautiful scenery in Conegliano Valdobbiadene. The vineyard slopes give a characteristic look to a land where its inhabitants have always had high respect for their environment, imbuing it with a particular charm. Castles, parish churches, abbeys and country houses create an enchanting landscape.
This natural oasis is easily reached by car on the A27 Venice-Udine motorway, Conegliano exit; by train on the Venice-Udine line, Conegliano train station; by plane with flights to Marco Polo airport in Venice or to Canova di Treviso airport.
Conegliano and Valdobbiadene are ideally linked by the Wine Route, which winds along the hills and connects the most characteristic and important places of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore production. Professor Italo Cosmo first thought of it in 1938 and it was completed in 1966, thanks to the work of experts like Giuseppe Schiratti. The wine route allows visitors to discover the many excellent local products and the beauty of an unspoilt corner of the Veneto. Although it was initially known as the Prosecco Route, in 2002 it was renamed the Prosecco and Wines of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Hills Route.
